Twin Cities Chimney Sweeps standard chimney cleanings includes, at no extra charge, a complete Level 2 Video Inspection by a CSIA Certified Technician. A lot of chimneys are easily accessible and the liner is visible from the top of the chimney. Some chimneys have bends in them, or questionable areas that can’t be seen without a video inspection. Chimney Fires & Creosote
Chimney fires occur when deposits of carbon and dust (creosote) accumulate in a chimney and are set on fire by sparks or flames from an open fire. The creosote deposits result when wood burns slowly and produces smoke, the smoke condenses on the cool inner surface of the chimney and a layer of creosote forms. Creosote is a highly flammable material. If it ignites at the base of the chimney, it can produce a raging fire that travels up the chimney at extremely high temperatures.

Most solid fuels create some kind of soot that builds up in the flue that will eventually catches fire if not maintained. Regular chimney cleaning reduces the risk of fire by removing creosote from your burning unit. Creosote WILL catch fire if allowed to build up–making it dangerous when left unchecked.

Our CSIA certified technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to clean and inspect chimneys of all kinds including; oil, wood, gas, pellet stoves, and any bio-mass system. While cleaning your burning system, we do a systematic 29 point (Level 1) inspection. “After” the cleaning process Twin Cities Chimney Sweep does a complete Level 2 video inspection. Our technicians look for any issues that could prevent peak performance, and recommend what is necessary to correct the problems so your system can burn safely and cleanly.

There are three types, or classifications, of creosote.

“Stage 1” creosote is almost like a powder form. It is easily removed by brushing, and can even be brushed off with the stroke of the hand. This is the simplest form of creosote, sometimes referred to as “Soot,” and is the easiest to remove.

“Stage 2” creosote is starting to take form now. This type of creosote is crunchy, looks almost like black foam, and is starting to block the flue. Stage 2 creosote can still be brushed off; however, it sometimes requires a lot of effort to get it off. When stage 2 is real bad, what is known as a power cleaning may be required. This type of creosote is dangerous because it blocks the flue, holding in more heat, and is extremely flammable. Therefore, any chimney with stage 2 build up is prime for a chimney fire.

“Stage 3” creosote is a combination of stage 1 and stage 2 that has been heated enough to cause it to melt. It now looks like black shiny glass, or molasses syrup, and it can be sticky like syrup. This type of creosote is extremely dangerous, very difficult to remove, and WILL cause a chimney fire! It is common to have all three stages of creosote in a chimney that has been neglected, it all needs to be cleaned out and inspected for safety.

Typically, the first two stages of creosote can be removed with a standard chimney cleaning. Stage 2 creosote build up sometimes requires a power cleaning to remove the creosote build-up. Stage 3 creosote can sometimes be removed with a power cleaning, but often requires what is known as a “Chemical Cleaning.” A chemical cleaning is done over the course of 1-3 weeks, depending on how bad the build-up is. One thing to keep in mind, creosote build-up doesn’t just go away without physically removing it-it only gets worse. Having your chimney cleaned and inspected on a regular basis keeps you safe and saves you money in the long run.
